MRC Human Reproductive Sciences Unit short-listed for Times Higher award

Professor Bob Millar, Director of the MRC Human Reproductive Sciences Unit (HRSU) in Edinburgh has been recognised for his work translating research into commercial products. He’s been short-listed in the Business Initiative of the Year category of The Times Higher Awards 2005.

This is the first year Times Higher has held these awards. This category celebrates the contributions made by academic institutions in developing links with business. In 2000 HRSU set up the drug company Ardana to commercialise its research. Ardana develops treatments for conditions such as prostate cancer and sexual dysfunction, as well as contraceptive and fertility products.

Professor Millar, who’s one of Ardana’s founders said: “I’ve always sought to address society’s health problems in my research. But I realised that translation into the clinic could be realistically achieved only through the formation of a company.”

The Medical Research Council would like to congratulate Professor Millar and his team on being short-listed and wish them luck for the awards which take place in London on November 23rd.
